The City of Saskatoon has the power to make important improvements to development in and around the Swale. That's why the civic election on October 26th 2016 is so critical.
Here are 5 key questions to ask your municipal candidates:
Do you agree that the Province should relocate the proposed Saskatoon Freeway (formerly the Perimeter Highway) to avoid crossing the Northeast Swale?
City council has taken action to ensure that lighting along city roads and pathways is Dark Sky compliant. Do you agree that the City should amend its bylaws to require commercial and residential properties adjacent to the Swale to meet these same standards, thereby reducing light spill into this area?
Do you agree that the City should designate additional green space as environmental reserve in the upcoming University Heights 3 development, to provide a broad, protective buffer along the Northeast Swale?
Do you agree that developers of the new neighbourhoods surrounding the Swale should pay levies to help defray the costs of carrying out the approved Master Plan for the Meewasin Swale Conservation Zone?
Two new arterial roads, the extensions of Central Avenue and McOrmond Drive, are currently being constructed across the Swale. Do you agree that these roadways should be adapted to provide safe crossing for wildlife, as a way to meet conservation goals within the Swale and to improve road safety?
